OK, so I’m finally back posting paintings. I’ve had a busy summer and when I wasn’t busy I was lazy. I’ll be 75 in two weeks so that’s my privilege!
And this week a break came in my busy schedule of being lazy, so I’ve done two paintings in two and a half days.
The first one here is a scene from my back yard that I sketched directly onto paper and then painted it. I made it kind of abstract-y and painted it all with a long, thin-bristled “rigger” brush. The hairs of the brush would flop all over, back and forth and make some interesting lines and pockets of paint. In the end it gave me what I wanted. 8″ x 11.25″ on Arches 140# hot press, with Winsor & Newton Watercolours.
The second painting was done today, en plein aire, over at the National Park beach at Beverly Shores. I also did this sketch from life and then sat at a picnic table and painted 90% of it in an hour and a half. I tweaked it just a tad when I got home. (Same stats as above).
A couple of couples came by as I sat there painting, along with a single fellow; I’ve always liked chatting with folks as I paint outdoors. These folks were very nice and I always like honing my extemporaneous verbal skills with strangers – it’s part of my job as a senior citizen!
