March 20th, 2025: ‘Wishful Thinking’

I call this one “Wishful Thinking”, because as I was painting it yesterday, nuggets of hail were clattering against the window.

This has all the traits that I like about watercolor painting: washy areas, places where the watercolor did all the work, spots where the brush seemed to give life to the paint reacting to being touched upon the paper’s surface, “lucky” areas that dried to just the way I wanted them to and areas where ‘I meant to do that’!

Sometimes I get to feel like a wizard waving a wand, making The Magic of Watercolor come forth. I’m a lucky boy.
